Over the last few decades, certain mental health issues have become more prominent in the public’s consciousness. More people are aware of these conditions or are themselves diagnosed with them. Medical professionals now know that depressive and anxiety disorders are the most common mental health concerns facing people. These disorders affect millions every year, but they are highly treatable. Similarly, many people are aware of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD. However, these same people tend to conflate ADHD with attention deficit disorder or ADD. It’s important to understand how these conditions differ so that the proper treatment can be found. At Santé Center for Healing, our counselors and therapists are skilled in treating conditions like ADHD and helping individuals understand the difference between ADD vs. ADHD.
ADD vs. ADHD
Addiction can affect your entire life, hurting you and the people that love you—sometimes addictive habits by ADD or ADHD. We offer treatment programs to help with both. At Santé Center for Healing at our ADHD treatment program in Texas, we can give you the tools of success to overcome your addiction and disorders that go along with it. Below is more information about ADD vs. ADHD.
What is ADD?
ADD stands for attention deficit disorder. Attention deficit disorder is very similar to ADHD, but without the client displaying hyperactivity behavior. The main symptom of attention deficit disorder is the inattentive behaviors the client shows over some time. Many adults display these behaviors in childhood, and they continue throughout adulthood. This cannot be cured, but the client can be given tools to cope with this disorder better.
What is ADHD?
ADHD stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, defined as a neurological disorder. People with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder have a hard time paying attention to things for short amounts of time. Most patients have ADHD because someone in their family passed it down to them. Most adults develop attention deficit hyperactivity disorder while children and in their adolescent years.
There are common symptoms of ADHD. For example, symptoms of ADHD in adults include forgetting to do chores, trouble listening when being spoken to, and staying on task at work. Those with ADHD are frequently distracted, lose valuable materials for activities and functions, do not focus on details or make simple mistakes repeatedly, and avoid activities requiring a lot of mental focus.
How are ADD and ADHD Alike?
Both ADD and ADHD are disorders where the client has a hard time paying attention for specific periods of time. Clients with ADD do not show the hyperactivity that clients with ADHD display. Clients with ADD and ADHD have difficulty managing tasks, work, paying attention, and meeting goals. Adults with ADD and ADHD will also think and act impulsively, leading to dangerous behaviors, such as addiction.
How are ADD and ADHD Different?
Although both ADD and ADHD are inattentive disorders, ADD clients do not show hyperactivity. While clients with ADHD do display behaviors of hyperactivity. If you have one of these conditions, along with addiction, we can help you overcome both.
