Detailed Information

Tonia N. Smith, MS, LPC, LMHC

Tonia holds a Master of Science Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the State of Texas and a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in the State of Washington. Tonia pursued her high school love of counseling after raising her two daughters. She has life experience dealing with a family history of death, divorce, terminal illness, and alcoholism. Tonia loves facilitating psycho-educational groups, having taught Theft Diversion, Life Skills, Money Management;  facilitated a Mental Health Supportive Outpatient Program (SOP) group for probation requirements; and worked with the Denton County Mental Health Treatment Court. She has experience working with anxiety and depression, boundary issues, chronic pain, divorce, narcissism, neurocognitive disorders, relationship conflict, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), schizophrenia, shame, and suicidal ideation. She expresses to those she works with that our past does not define us; it is what we do with our circumstances that molds our character. Tonia believes hope and authenticity plays an ever-present role in our journeys and enjoys helping people find what that means to them. Her passion is to provide counseling through an existential approach by finding meaning in life from suffering and increasing awareness and potential for choice. Life is difficult, but Tonia believes as Nietzsche that “He who has a why to live can bear with almost any how.”   Her heart is to provide a non-judgmental and compassionate safe place to guide clients in finding their why by integrating spiritual, emotional, physical and social aspects of their beings to live a more authentic and fulfilling life.  Tonia is currently writing a book entitled “What Does It Look Like to be Me?”
