Brandon Peters, LPC
The “Brandon Peters Difference”
In my past work as a therapist for various counseling agencies and as a consumer in my own counseling, I’ve often found myself frustrated with the “corporate model” of therapy. Nearly all of my non private practice work has been with agencies, who despite their “nonprofit” moniker seemed to be all too consumed with bottom lines. Countless times in agency work, I was encouraged by supervisors to make CLINICAL decisions in a way that directly rendered them, FINANCIAL decisions. Paperwork was given priority over client care. I was once told by a supervisor that I could not “give that diagnosis because insurance won’t pay for it”. As a consumer, I’ve often found the process of simply scheduling my own therapy session to be a daunting task with mountains of paperwork and red tape to negotiate.
But we can do something about that…
The famous psychologist and father of client centered therapy, Carl Rogers encouraged us to remember that it is the therapeutic relationship that is the vehicle through which healing occurs. If we are to fully follow this line of thought, I believe it is important to have less of a focus on policy and procedure and more of a focus on the here and now, human to human interactions between client and therapist. In our work, we’ll complete some brief paperwork in the initial session and that’s generally the end of it. My goal is to keep our counseling relationship as clean and simple and straightforward as possible. In order to accomplish this, in your work with me, you won’t find endless bureaucracy or stigmatizing and unnecessary diagnosis. There will be no pointless paperwork and homework sheets, no meddling from insurance companies or third parties, just straightforward, person to person work towards a common goal.
